VW and Audi vehicles are extremely popular and nowadays rely very heavily on electronic systems for efficient operation. For example, newer style Passats and others have an electronic handbrake, which needs to be released by a scan tool before the rear pads can be changed. Some scanners can do this, in theory, but you have to know the right channel number for opening and a different one for closing, not to mention the procedure to be followed. The Autel DS708 gets over this by telling you exactly what to do, in plain English.
Then there's the question of the service light where, once again, the Autel machine provides a simple procedure. As for telling the ECU whether you have installed long life oil, many machines simply can't tackle that on VWs from around 2006. With the recent introduction of Autel's new VW software version 4.0, this can now be handled by the DS708 in an elegant, efficient manner. Incidentally, Autel's VW-specialist engineers are in the UK right now, so look out for more exciting developments in this field, including full VAG coverage to the end of 2011 (currently 2010/11).
By the way, enthusiasts for older 1990s VWs are not neglected either. The official UK kit includes a 2 x 2 pin harness to cover these cars, as well as all the software needed to go with it.
